There has been a recent wave of virus infections that are directly related to advertisements. These viruses may cause popups of pornographic images, and generally include a variant of fake anti-virus software. You can get this kind of infection just by loading an advertisement on normal websites, so it’s important to have up to date virus protection and to be wary if you see any symptoms of infection.
Criminals create viruses and then buy advertising slots on prominent websites, and while these infected ads are taken down quickly (sometimes in seconds), thousands of computers are already infected by the time they are removed.
